The World Trade Organization (WTO) will hold a ministerial meeting on 15 July to review an advanced negotiating text with the aim to reach an agreement to end subsidies that drive overfishing. WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has urged heads of delegations to remain engaged and flexible to conclude negotiations.

Ahead of the event, the Stop Funding Overfishing campaign has produced a short animated video explaining the problem of overfishing and the urgent need for a World Trade Organization agreement to address the issue. The video illustrates that over one-third of the world’s marine fish populations are overfished, devastating ocean ecosystems and threatening the livelihoods of local fishing communities—and governments are contributing to this ongoing destruction by subsidizing fishing operations with taxpayer money. WTO members are now closer than ever to reaching an ambitious agreement to stop harmful fisheries subsidies, and this video disseminated by leading NGOs around the world and their followers will help to amplify the global call to stop funding overfishing.
